          • What is the reason for baptism?
There are two sacraments of Christianity, Baptism and the Holy Communion, which are holy ceremonies established by the Lord Himself. Baptism, as Jesus said just before he ascended to heaven, “… Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20), was given to us as the great command.
Baptism means ‘to wash away sins.’ It is a public expression that the old self, born and lived in sin, dies and is now cleansed and saved by the grace of God in the name of Jesus. It also symbolises that they have been born again and renewed by the Holy Spirit and became the people of the kingdom of God.
If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is the saviour of life through the Jesus Receiving Meeting, you must be baptised. It seems that the hesitation about baptism is due to the lack of confidence in expressing one’s faith openly or the difficulty of being baptised in front of many people. However, if you have accepted Jesus, the Bible recommends that you do not hesitate to be baptised. It is because through the process of being baptised, fear is overcome and assurance in faith is obtained.
Some people have been baptised in the Catholic Church, in a cult, or in the military before, and they ask if they should get baptised again. In the past, I have asked them to decide for themselves. However, as time went on, I became convinced that it was more beneficial for people in such a situation to be baptised again. Rather, it is because we see people experiencing the certainty and joy of salvation by being baptised with a correct and certain confession of faith. Furthermore, since we believe that the complete immersion baptism is more biblical, we carry out complete immersion during baptism, and so there is no issue with a person who was baptised with only water sprinkled on their head is baptised again by complete immersion. Of course, if you have been baptised with the assurance of salvation before, you do not need to be baptised again.
I pray that the number of people baptised at each house church will continue this year. Whenever someone is baptised during worship, all the church members rejoice and experience that it is a time for celebration. I believe that this is not us only, but also something that is rejoiced by the angels in God’s kingdom. It is because the Lord is most pleased when a soul hears the gospel and is baptised.
