Jesus who was teaching at the temple courts is asked by the religious leaders “By whose authority are you teaching these people?”, and in response Jesus asks “Where did John’s baptism come from? The one you know well”. They answered “We don’t know”.
The reason why they said [We don’t know] was because they didn’t know that Jesus is the true saviour. If they knew who Jesus was, and where his authority came from, they would’ve feared God more than man.
What is our faith like?
I hope that we will be able to deeply meditate on whether we truely know Jesus and live with faith.

25 John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’
26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”
27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
