Last week in Houston, America, a funeral service was held for Mrs Choi Hyesoon, wife of Pastor Choi Younggi.
Pastor Choi Younggi has had the greatest influence on me through his House Church. Mrs Choi was diagnosed with cancer 26 years ago and had fought it till now thanks to the prayers of numerous people. I can only imagine how hard it must have been to live as a pastor’s wife with such illness, always putting others first, but she would always say, “Don’t let your fear of illness for tomorrow darken your today.”
Through his prayer letter, Pastor Choi Younggi explained how Mrs Choi’s abdomen and chest were filled with tumor but she was painless till her last moments and she passed away peacefully as if falling into sleep. Mrs Choi had pre-arranged her funeral, and she requested for it to be like a celebration. She wanted colourful flowers rather than ones typically seen at funerals, and she asked everyone attending her funeral service to be dressed in colourful clothes. She also asked for her favourite worship songs to be sung during the service. She genuinely wanted her funeral to be a farewell party for her departure to heaven.
The funeral service was a time of grace. At the end, Pastor Choi came out to thank the attendees and he said, “we promised to meet at the south gate of heaven” and told his church members to meet him there also. Could anyone dealing with death be more inspiring? It was possible because they “genuinely believed in heaven”. “They believed that their life here on earth was a temporary assignment God had sent them for and in the end they would return to their Father..” It was overwhelming and also inspiring. I hope that we too can live with faith in the gospel of heaven.
