          • Changes to the church since COVID-19 2

The world is experiencing what is called “untact” as we are forced to socially distance ourselves due to COVID-19. Our daily routine has been replaced with working from home, remote medical exams, online classes, etc. and most of our shopping is done online or via delivery services. Our hobbies such as exercising or watching movies are all being done at home. The fear of being in contact will encourage development of advanced technology such as artificial intelligent robots and our daily lives will become more ‘untact;’ in various ways.

On one hand, this ‘untact’ society will help us realize the importance of families and communities post-COVID-19. Social distancing has helped the self-isolated realize the value of families and despite the positive effects of families spending more time with each other, conflicts have increased within families as well. A new term ‘covidivorce’ has been created as many families are breaking up during COVID-19 crisis.

What role will the church play in the “untact” world after COVID-19? The society will be worn out from the social distancing and will need a “contact” culture. Hence the church should not only be a place for worship but be a place which provides a place to talk and laugh freely for those who feel lonely from the isolation, and for families, a place to reconnect with one another. And our mokjangs should be a place of love and service where people can experience the joy of belonging to a heavenly family community.

            This week’s message
May is family month. Let us all practice one thing that will bring joy and happiness to our family.
