Paul sends Onesimus, who had fled, back to his master Philemon and asks him to forgive Onesimus and to take him back not as a slave but as a brother in Christ Jesus.
Onesimus became a Christian when he met Paul and heard the Gospel through him, and became a trustworthy brother of faith. This is why Paul urged Philemon to become one with him for the sake of God’s Kingdom, through forgiveness and love.
It would have been very difficult for Philemon to take Onesimus back but Paul knew he would obey with faith. His forgiveness and acceptance that overcame social status by the power of the Gospel is a role model for us Christians today.
Passage: Philemon 1:15-25
16 no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.
17 So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me.
18 If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me.
