The king of Babylon appoints a man named Gedaliah as governor of the people of Judah for the sake of the poor. Gedaliah says to the remaining people of Judah, ‘harvest the wine, summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over.’
Judah had been defeated and were to live as captives, but they are being told to harvest wine and summer fruit.
This would have put ‘hope’ in the people.
I reflect myself against Gedaliah and think.. do I plant hope...?
Or am I also living helplessly in despair like those in distress?
I hope we can all be Christians who plant hope in others, like Jesus.
Passage: Jeremiah 40:7~16
9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. “Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians,” he said. “Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.
10 I myself will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine, summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over.”
