Verses 18 and 20 explain the responsibility that the King of Israel must be obliged to. That is to keep close to the Word of the Lord. The reason is because they must learn to fear the Lord. Because someone is the king, it does not mean that they know all about the Word. Before one becomes the king, they must learn to fear God and be humble as God’s people. We must not by lazy in front of God’s Words. Those who keep close to the Word will not be prideful but be able to protect themselves. I hope that we are able to stay close to the Lord by reading, meditating and sharing his Word.
Deuteronomy 4:17:14-20
18.When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests.
19.It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees
20.and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.
