God said to free their slaves and write off their poor neighbour’s debts every 7 years. How desperately would the slaves have longed for this day? They would have wanted to be free from slavery as soon as possible. However if a slave wanted to stay a slave of their owner forever, they pierced a nail through their ear and into the door. When they did this, they were forever a slave of that owner. Why did they choose to do this? This was because they received grace that they could never forget. What could they do to pay back what they had received? The answer to that was ‘even if I live, I will live for my owner; even if I die, I will die for my owner’. They then would have decided to live as their slave forever.
Shouldn’t we be the slave with pierced ears, and live a life where we live to serve Jesus who blessed us with unending grace?
Passage: Deuteronomy 15:12-23
16 But if your servant says to you, “I do not want to leave you,” because he loves you and your family and is well off with you,
17 then take an awl and push it through his earlobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your female servant.
18 Do not consider it a hardship to set your servant free, because their service to you these six years has been worth twice as much as that of a hired hand. And the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.
1. Did I think of Jesus when I woke up this morning?
