God warns the people of Israel to not have any idols around them. He knew that because He was invisible, the visible idols would be a threat to their faith.
Calvin once described human’s nature as ‘a perpetual factory of idols.’ In other words, we have an eternal thirst to have something to depend on. Therefore if we let go of God, we will very easily fall for idolatry.
We can avoid idolatry by being closer to God. Keeping the word close, desiring worship, and distancing ourselves from anything that could become an idol in our hearts. As we stay close to God today, I hope the idols in our hearts are removed and our day is filled with God’s presence.
Passage: Deuteronomy 7:12-26
25 The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord your God.
26 Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.
1. Did you think of Jesus when you woke up this morning?
2. What is God’s message to you?
3. What do you need to obey?
4. What are you grateful for today?
