Paul preached the gospel of grace but there were a group of Jews who focused highly on circumcision and keeping the law which tempted the believers to think they were saved by their actions. This distracted the people from the truth of being saved by faith and made them think they are saved by doing good works.
Many believers live an anxious and joyless life of faith without having any assurance in their salvation. They think, how can a sinner like me go into heaven? This derives from the thought that salvation is earned by doing good works and keeping the law. These people judge and condemn others with their own standards.
We can ask, then is keeping the law meaningless? No it’s not. Holiness and act of good works will naturally follow those who are saved by God’s grace because the Holy Spirit will guide those who have been saved.
We who are weak, should hold onto the gospel of grace that was displayed through the cross.
Passage to read: Galatians 5:1-12
9 “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” 10 I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty. 11 Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.
