          • The power of the precious blood

When people disobeyed God’s law (or they committed sins), the only way for them to be forgiven was through shedding blood. So the people in the Old Testament days received forgiveness by offering sacrifices to pay the price of their sins. Those who sinned transferred their sins to the sacrificial animal by placing their hand on the animal and the priest killed it in front of the sinner to confirm their forgiveness.

This practice was important, not in showing the process of how sins were forgiven, but in showing how frightening the consequence of sin was. The Israelites did not feel any guilt towards the innocent animals that died in front of their eyes solely because of the sins that they had committed. It was no longer possible for the animals’ death and blood to cure their dark conscience.

However, Jesus’ death on the cross is different. Jesus’ death not only shows the frightening consequence of sin but it also lets us realise how much God loves us. Animals’ blood may technically be able to remove our sins but Jesus’ love and the blood He shed changes our hearts and renews us. When we meditate on Jesus who became a scapegoat for us and died, we can experience the power of His precious blood that renews our conscience.

            Passage: Hebrews 9:23-28
23 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence.
25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.
26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.

            1. Did you think of Jesus when you woke up this morning?
            2. What is God’s message to you?
            3. What do you need to obey?
            4. What are you grateful for today?
