Jesus was equal to God but He gave up His glory for us by coming to earth in a human body that was full of despair. Yes, He was a high priest who came to redeem us from our sins but I always wondered why it was so necessary for Jesus to suffer, and verse 18 really hit home to me today.
Jesus came to earth to be with us and He experienced all the pain and suffering humans suffer. Because of this, Jesus not only has the power to deal with our circumstances, but He can also sympathise with us. I believe we are moved by God’s love all the more because He cares for us with His understanding and empathy of our hearts.
Conversations that may seem theologically perfect but aren’t touching does not heal a person’s heart. However, when a conversation has empathy and understanding, it has the power to heal, even if it may lack theological reasoning. Just as Jesus came to earth to fully understand us, we too must go where God’s lost sheep are to fully serve them.
Passage: Hebrews 2:10-18
17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
