Pilate who appears in today’s passage was the 5th Roman governor who ruled Judea, Samaria, and Idumea. He had authority over the military, the law and religion, and even though he knew that Jesus was innocent, he allowed people to crucify Him because he was afraid of what they would say about him if he didn’t. He goes from fearing people’s opinion of him to later on being named a sinner the rest of his life for being responsible for Jesus’ death. (from the Apostles’ Creed)
Yes, we can be afraid of people’s opinions, but what we should fear even more is missing out on God’s will because we are too busy worrying about being judged.
People can cause us temporary pain but God has the power to punish sinners permanently. We need to think very hard who it is we should fear in our lives.
Passage: Mark 15:1-15
14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
