As a Sunday School teacher teaching children, I come across all kinds of situations with them. At times, I see purity in them and at times, greed. It is said that the kingdom of God belongs to those that are like children, and it makes me wonder, ‘do we really have to be so pure and honest as these children to go to heaven?’
We need to understand today’s passage with the historical background in mind, rather than simply thinking of children’s qualities.
At the time, the Jews expected the future King and his land to restore their lost glory and power, and they wanted him to be a military king, destroying the Roman Empire. Their minds were full of their own ideas and interpreted God’s message however they liked. They were greedy and arrogant.
On the other hand, the children were neglected and had a low social status. They were powerless and looked poor and weak. Nobody thought the great kingdom of God would belong to those like them. God delighted in being there for those that were poor at heart and were neglected by the world.
It is a blessing when we are disregarded at work, are treated unfairly whilst doing a good deed, and don’t have as much as others.
Despite being unacknowledged and having a low status, the glory and joy we will receive in the kingdom of God is certain. The kingdom of God belongs to the lowly.
Passage: Mark 10:1-16
14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.
