When we look at the ‘idols’ which led so many people to destruction back in the time of the Old Testament, we don’t really understand. Why were people so obsessed with a piece of wood, so much so that they were led to destruction?
As we don’t serve those structures, does that mean we are far away from idolatry?
Like these, we have many questions.
The real danger of idolatry is that they replace God.
In times of crisis and in times when they were in need of help, the Israelites and their kings found rest in their hearts through idols.
This was because unlike God who they could not physically see, when they were most desperate for help, they could see the idols and they felt that these wooden structures could offer more rest for that moment.
This led the people of Israel to become more and more obsessed with idols.
This has a relation to us in the modern day. We can see what our idols are through what we rely on when we are feeling empty and tired from all of life’s problems.
These seem as though they are temporarily giving us comfort of the heart, happiness and a peace of mind but in reality they are not solving anything. They lure us to be more and more obsessed and ultimately, leads us to destruction.
We have to destroy all of these idols in our hearts.
Even though we may feel uncertain and anxious as we cannot physically see our God, when we rely on Him, He will lead us to victory.
God knows all our needs, and prepares them for us in advance.
When we trust in God and follow him, we will feel touched and be able to experience joy that no idol could ever give us.
Passage : 2 Chronicles 27:1-9
6 Jotham grew powerful because he walked steadfastly before the Lord his God.
7 The other events in Jotham’s reign, including all his wars and the other things he did, are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.
8 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years.
9 Jotham rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. And Ahaz his son succeeded him as king.
