From this Friday to Sunday, the 958th House Church Seminar for Lay Leaders will be held. The prayers and hard work you have poured into preparing for it have been truly moving. But as we serve, there is something we must remember: just as we are giving of ourselves, the participants have also made no small sacrifice to be here. Some have taken their first holiday in ten years, and others have paid far higher airfares than usual to come.
Each participant may come for slightly different reasons. But I believe the most important reason is the earnest longing of pastors to build a biblical church. So let us keep in mind the eagerness of the pastors and their wives who are praying and asking for help to build healthy churches.
Being hosted in a complete stranger’s home may feel uncomfortable, and we are often asked whether participants could sleep at their own home or in a hotel instead. But we open our homes because house church is not learned in theory; it is learned by seeing. Some things can never be learned just by listening to lectures and understanding the theory. In our experience, past participants have remembered the hospitality and service of our members far longer than the lectures.
Participants will return to their churches and serve exactly as they saw you serve. And one day, when they face difficulties in ministry, they will remember your faces from this seminar and find new strength.
Hebrews urges us to “worship God acceptably” (Heb 12:28), and then says, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it” (Heb 13:2). Serving and welcoming guests is something that pleases God.
