Our Lord said, “My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations” (Mark 11:17). Jesus threw the way to God wide open and made the church a place of prayer. Only when the church is truly a place of prayer can it carry out the mission he has given us — to save the lost and make disciples.
What matters most is that we ourselves become people of prayer. Receiving answers is important, but becoming a person of prayer is more important still. If something in you never seems to change however many sermons you hear and however hard you try, and you feel spiritually stifled, that is a sign that what you need in the end is prayer. And if you have grown used to a life without prayer, you may not even notice it. Where there is no prayer, evil spirits keep returning in one form after another, because there is no defence against them.
Our faith is a matter of trusting God and leaning on him, and of receiving his power. There is much that will not come right by our own strength, however hard we work at it, so depending on God in prayer is absolutely necessary. Praying shows how much we truly want him and depend on him.
Some of you may feel you are no good at praying. There is no need to worry. Prayer is not learned in theory; it is learned in the place of prayer, alongside others. Even if you cannot pray fluently, if your heart calls on the Father, the Holy Spirit will help you.
The Three Cord Prayer Meeting begins tomorrow. Shepherds and shepherds’ partners, your part is to lead your house church members to the place of prayer and to set them in threes so they pray together. Please share your prayer requests beforehand. Praise will play in the sanctuary all day, well before the 7.30PM start, so you can pray there at any time. Over these two weeks, come and pray whenever you can, and become people of prayer.
