Last week we finished the 144th Oceania House Church Pastors’ Conference in God’s grace. There were unusually many first-time pastors this time, and I could feel afresh that interest in House Church is growing across Oceania. The evening services were led by Pastor Chang-Hwan Park of Pangyo Dreaming Church, who gladly made time for us even while his own church was in the middle of a busy 40-day prayer meeting — how thankful I was.
After preaching, Pastor Park led us in prayer — not the usual three cries of “Lord!” but ten. As we cried out “Lord! Lord!” ten times and prayed, then cried out ten times more and prayed on, the presence of the Holy Spirit filled the auditorium. Even without spelling out every detail of our circumstances, the cry itself was already prayer, for in that one word “Lord” were contained all our love, faith, and longing for Him. It reminded me of how the elders of my childhood would pray in tears before their hardships: “Lord, You know. Lord, You know it all.” Everything was contained in that short cry.
I earnestly long for Sydney Crystal Church to stand as a church that prays desperately. When we pray, we receive the Holy Spirit, evil spirits flee, and blocked problems are loosed. The Lord established the church with His own blood and told us to be filled with the Spirit; without the Holy Spirit, worry and anxiety never leave us, and our hearts dry up within human thoughts and methods.
House churches, too, must be built on prayer. Without prayer, a house church has neither the wisdom to solve problems, nor the strength to overcome the attacks of the evil one, nor the wisdom to help its members through the many difficulties of life. The shepherd’s task is to lead the members into the place of prayer — for when a house church prays together, it becomes a living house church led by the Holy Spirit Himself.
Word of the week
Prayer is the breathing of the soul. It is not that we are too busy to pray — rather, life becomes busy and tangled because we do not pray.
