          • Ten Dates Before Dating

Last Saturday our church held its second “Singles Plus” seminar for single young adults. Covering everything from dating to marriage, it deals with the biblical values and training young adults need most, and it was met with great interest. We plan to continue it twice a year.
This Singles Plus was served and taught by young couples who married in our church. Rather than theory, they candidly shared their real journey from dating to being built up as husband and wife within the faith. I believe their example itself was a living textbook for our young adults.
One of the seminar’s key elements is the training of going on ten dates before starting a relationship. Instead of rushing into romance swept along by feelings, you first look carefully at the other person’s values, faith, and attitude to life, and then thoughtfully decide whether to begin dating at all.
Discernment must come before emotion. Young people easily take attraction to be the whole of love, but true love grows not from a burst of feeling but through a season of discernment. Ten dates are the first step in seeing the other person as they are, without hurry, and preparing for the lifelong covenant of marriage.
The seminar also showed that dating can be trained within faith and within community. The church has often left dating and marriage to the private realm, yet the dating and marriage of our young adults is a vital foundation for building the next generation of House Church — and couples who have walked the road first embracing the next generation is exactly the beautiful flow House Church dreams of.
Many young people have grown up without ever seeing a biblical, healthy marriage. I believe they took such interest in Singles Plus because, having watched the pain of their parents’ generation, they still dream of true love and an unshakable home. As Singles Plus continues year after year, I look forward to many healthy families being born who become living models.

            Word of the week
Growth in faith is not shaped in the pews of the sanctuary. It begins in the table community of the house church, where we rub up against one another and are refined.
