Through visiting thriving house churches during my sabbatical, I have come to realise something. House churches that are growing with vitality each have their own special 'atmosphere that can only thrive.' This atmosphere is not something that can be artificially manufactured through programmes or systems — it is an invisible spiritual air, the very presence of the Holy Spirit.
When you step through the doors of a thriving church's worship service, the spiritual air is different from the very first moment. You can feel the Holy Spirit moving. It is because each and every person worships God wholeheartedly, as if this very service were the last worship of their life. Within the praise sung with a fervency like earnest prayer, the comfort and tears of grace given by the Holy Spirit flow together. This kind of spiritual atmosphere even causes VIPs attending for the first time to experience for themselves what worship truly is, and makes them think, 'I want to come back here.'
The next atmosphere you sense is a bright and lively 'joy and gladness.' A thriving church is neither stiff nor solemn. It feels exactly like arriving at a banquet — every member's face radiates life and overflows with joy. That joy flows from voluntary service. It is not reluctant service done because someone told you to — serving with genuine delight is woven into who they are. Because everyone wants to welcome and serve one another, there is always an abundance to share. It is not the feeling of offloading leftovers, but a desire to share the very best. This is entirely different from the spirit of the world, where people grasp for more for themselves. This atmosphere transforms the church into a heavenly banquet hall — and it flows from the deep, intimate relationships formed through love and service in the house church.
Most importantly of all is 'genuine love for souls.' No matter how loudly we proclaim the salvation of souls with our lips, if there is no sincere love for one another, it is nothing but an echo in the air. Ministry without love will ultimately exhaust everyone. It becomes easy to judge: 'Why can't that person do better?' But when the heart of God's love — poured out through deep intimacy with Him — flows through worship and the house church, and love for one another fills every heart, it creates an 'atmosphere that can only thrive' that the world simply cannot imitate.
Word of the week
When we earnestly seek to know the Lord, God will meet us with even greater love and wisdom. May this be a week full of grace, richly enjoying the joy of knowing the Lord in your daily life.
