          • Do We Need to Carry a Bible?

These days, with just a Bible app on a smartphone, we can read Scripture anywhere. Perhaps because of this, more and more people come to Sunday worship carrying only their phones instead of a physical Bible. Some ask, “Do we really need to carry a Bible?” Whether one must bring a physical Bible to church is not something that can be forced as right or wrong. However, one thing is clear: how we treat the Bible—our attitude toward God’s Word—is deeply connected to how we treat God Himself. Here are three reasons why it is good to carry a physical Bible.

First, it helps us come to worship with a prepared heart. On Sunday morning, the small act of putting a Bible into our bag already aligns our hearts for worship. It reflects an attitude that says, “Today also, I will listen to God’s Word and obey.” It shows the basic posture with which we approach the Word and worship.

Second, it leads to spiritual growth. The reason I do not display Scripture passages on the screen before the sermon during Sunday worship is because I want people to practice bringing their own well-used Bibles, finding the passages themselves, and reading along. Christian faith training is grounded in the Word, and it has been saddening to see more people living their faith without a Bible in hand. Yet when I see someone’s Bible filled with underlines, notes, and signs of use, it feels like a gracious record of that person’s spiritual growth. When they open it again years later, they can say, “Ah, this was the time God spoke this word to me,” and discover traces of how their faith has grown.

Third, it sets an example for the next generation. Our children grow up watching their parents. How parents treat the Bible becomes the model for their children. If we rely only on convenience and use apps alone, one day our children may ask, “What is a Bible?” This is why parents of faith should buy Bibles for their children, show that they treasure their own Bibles, and demonstrate the habit of bringing a Bible to church. When that happens, the Bible becomes not just an accessory for faith, but a weapon of faith.

Outside of Sundays—at house church meetings, other gatherings, or in personal time—Bible apps are a great help for reading and listening to Scripture, and I strongly encourage their use. However, if someone asks, “Do we need to carry a Bible on Sundays?” my answer is this: on Sundays, I encourage you to bring a physical Bible with you.

            Word of the Week
We have a vision to build the church that Jesus dreamed of. We must not forget that the church Jesus desires is one that saves souls and makes disciples.
