The First Commandment with a Promise
Today is Mother's Day. The origin of Mother's Day began in the early 1900s when a lady named Anna wore a white carnation to a church service in the US in memory of her mother. Mother's Day gradually spread, and the US Congress designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Australia also observes the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. And Korea observes Parents' Day as a day to thank both parents.
The Bible clearly states that honouring parents is a command from God. The fifth commandment of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:12 says, “Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” The Apostle Paul emphasised once again that we should obey our parents in the Lord and honour them, and spoke of the promised blessings that come with honouring our parents (Ephesians 6:1-3). We can see that honouring our parents is not simply ethical teaching, but a precious channel through which God blesses our lives.
Living here in Australia, I often feel the importance of my parents more keenly. For my parents who are far away in your home country, you may feel sorry and miss them for not being able to visit them often. For parents who are here in Australia, you may feel grateful and sorry for the hardships and dedication they experienced as they settled down in a foreign land. Regardless of the situation, parents are precious people who gave birth to us, raised us, and embraced us with love on behalf of God’s great love, so they deserve to be respected.
On Parents' Day, please take a moment to stop your busy life and express your heart to your parents. Give your parents in your home country a warm phone call to say hello. For your parents here in Australia, it would be a great joy to show your love by treating them to a meal or spending time with them.
“Honour your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:2-3)
Word of the week
They say that parents only remember the things they were sorry about, and children only remember the things they were sad about. Today is Parents' Day. Let us be thankful for the grace of our parents who raised us with love and grace and cared for us.
