Those who are not interested in the Christian life (Pastor Choi Younggi's column)
Some VIPs won't budge even after a long time and they are usually people whose lives are smooth sailing. They travel around the world, go to nice restaurants and enjoy their lives playing golf, hiking, etc. They don't think too hard about death or what comes after death because they are too busy enjoying their present life. However, even those who seem carefree all have fear deep inside. They have fear of death. They might say they're not afraid of death but that's because it seems too far away to them. But when faced with death, it's a different story. Death itself may not be as scary but growing old and weak, and the pain of death, have embedded fear in their hearts.
Also, loneliness can cause fear. Despite having many friends and relatives, it's hard to find someone to have a heart-to-heart talk with. Despite being married, they can sometimes feel alone in this world. They might ask themselves, will my wife, and my friends still be by my side if I lost everything I had? And they console themselves by telling themselves that we are all meant to be alone in this world.
Then there is the feeling of helplessness. When they were young, they accepted changes pretty well but as they age, they feel their ability to adapt to changes deteriorate. They are often overcome with fear of losing out to competition and becoming a failure in life.
It is only those who have accepted Jesus that have the answer to this problem. As God’s children, we have gained eternal life and death is no longer a fear for us. We no longer feel alone because Jesus who resurrected is with us and we belong to the church community which is also his body. We no longer feel helpless because Jesus, who has authority over the heaven and earth, is in charge of my life.
This is why we must wait and pray for those who don’t feel the need for God. Life without Jesus will encounter problems without a doubt, and when they are faced with the problem, we must help them meet Jesus. And we as Christians, who have the answer to life’s problems, have an obligation to show to the world how happy we are living with God and God’s people.
