I read Ms Hong Yesuk's testimonial book "I am a truly happy person" last week and was quite moved by it. A story of her meeting the principal of an orphanage made me apply her story to my ministry. One day, a principal of an orphanage visited her at her prayer house. The principal wanted to know if he should close down his orphanage because of the kids that were too troublesome and misbehaving. Ms Hong told the principal what God would want him to do. She advised him to be a real father to the orphans with genuine love for them just as God our Father loved His children, rather than treating the orphanage as a business and a source of income.
Ms Hong herself had done orphan ministry and she says it was not easy. Many orphans have emotional scars so one must be very careful with what they say and do around them, and despite sacrificing and loving them, the children are unable to control their temper and rebel against the carers. But when Ms Hong prayed and embraced the children with Father’s love, they began to change. And most importantly, she became happier.
This testimony gave me the answer to my question as a pastor, 'What is ministry?' ‘Ministry is loving my sheep and my souls God has entrusted me with before preaching and teaching them'. Mokjang ministry is the same-it is 'loving the souls God has entrusted me with’. If you have conflicts with your mokjang members, it may be because you are still at the same spiritual level as them or you don't love them with a father's heart. Ministry and mokjangs both require continued love in order for us to be happy.
"Jesus loved his own who were in the world, and he loved them to the end. (John 13:1)
This week’s message
Next week is Thanksgiving week. Let us prepare an offering of gratitude as we give thanks for God’s grace. The Thanksgiving offering will be sent to mission fields to help missionaries who are in need and also to help the poor.
