Christians in Korean churches are used to using titles at church, so most people naturally earn the title deacon after having been a Christian for some time. However, some people are called a deacon even though they hadn’t obtained the title and I think it may be because there is no other suitable title to address them by.
At church, we address one another as brother or sister, but it can appear somewhat rude for younger people to call older people by this. I would like to, therefore explain briefly how we can approach this.
First, please address your own mokjang leaders as mokjanim and moknyonim. This is a ministerial title so once you are no longer a mokjang leader, the title is also removed. Many of us call our mokjang leaders by their names but this makes it hard to create a spiritual order and our VIPs will also be calling them by their names rather than titles.
Secondly, you can address other mokjang leaders either as mokja or by their title, should they have one. Titles include pastor, missionary, elder, ordained deacon and deacon.
Thirdly, the rest of us can be addressed as brother or sister, but it can be awkward for younger people to call those much older than them by this. I would like for the younger people to address the older members of the church as "momaenim"to older females and "buhyungnim" or "father" to older males.
I first came across the term “momaenim” when I went to Seoul Church in Houston for training. “Momae” means ‘a mother-like sister’ and many house churches are currently using the term. Buhyungnim also is a portmanteau, or a word blend, meaning father and brother, displaying respect for the elders. This being said, the most beautiful title for Christians, in my opinion, is 'Lord's people'.
