          • Non-essentials and essentials

A pastor that attended a ministry seminar once confessed that his church had the best of everything from the pulpit to the church program but lacked interest in, and was negligent about the most important thing to the church- saving lost souls.
We too can become negligent of the essentials and get hung up on the non-essentials in our lives individually and as a church. We need to tend to the non-essentials but not at the risk of missing the essentials.
For example, we could build a nice church building, prepare wholeheartedly for our services and ministries and have good church programs but if we are negligent about God’s desire for us to save lost souls, we would become a church that has overlooked the essentials of a church.
Even if the praise and worship team had beautiful, impressive sounds, if the singers were singing without being touched by God’s grace, they have missed the essentials. The essentials of praise is to glorify God and the sound itself is a non-essential.
Also, being too used to doing something can prevent you from distinguishing the essentials from non-essentials and therefore miss the essentials.
If during service there is no repentance, gratitude or a new resolution, the service would have missed its essentials. If you take a lot of bible study classes but fail to be obedient, the bible study class has missed its essentials. Prayers in which you ask for your needs without listening to what God has to say is a prayer without the essentials.
Even if you are busy with church-related duties and events, if you don’t have a loving and serving heart for others, you may be leading a life of faith that has missed the essentials. If you anticipate God’s grace but refuse to make sacrifices by serving others, again, your life as a Christian is one without the essentials.
I hope that we are able to differentiate the essentials from non-essentials and focus on the essentials in our lives as Christians both personally and as a church.

            This week’s message
Normally, mokjangs gather together for the after-service lunch but there are mokjangs that aren’t able to be together due to various circumstances. Same goes for newcomers and visitors. If you notice this please invite others to eat with you so we are able to interact with more people outside of our own mokjang.
