The 26th Mokja Conference ended in grace, and despite there being numerous challenges prior to the event, every moment was a joy and a touching moment. It was also surprising to see how many mokjang leaders there were in Oceania, and I hope to see those who weren’t able to attend this year, at our next year’s conference in Brisbane.
In the lead up to the conference, Missionary Lee Won Joon (Jo Buck Mokjang) underwent a heart surgery after going to the emergency room with chest pain. The first procedure was to unblock the blood vessels by inserting two stents and he had to undergo another surgery last Tuesday to insert two additional stents. As a foreigner, the hospital fee was a huge financial strain for missionary Lee, not to mention the admission fee.
His wife, Yoo Hae Sook, also a missionary, said she was grateful it didn’t happen on the plane or while they were in Africa where medical care is quite poor. We are also grateful he was able to undergo surgery at RPA, a hospital best known in Australia for heart surgeries, and also close to where he was staying. He has now been discharged and is recovering in Sydney as he is unable to fly too soon after the surgery. And we need everyone’s love and support during this time.
The medical fees ($30,000) have yet to be paid. We had hoped that his travel insurance would cover the costs, however, the claim was declined because it wasn’t an accidental injury. The hospital had advised him to go back to Korea and receive further treatment, but this too would be difficult for him to do as he doesn’t have a home in Korea and doesn’t have health insurance in Africa where he has lived his whole life.
This experience missionary Lee went through this past week was a second-hand experience into what a missionary’s life is like. Please pray to our God the provider to provide the medical expenses and for missionary Lee to return to his mission field healed, without any medical complications or issues.
“Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward.” (Matthew 10:41)
