          • Why house churches are powerful

Pastor Park Changhwan ministering in Korea attended ‘Fundamentals of a house church’ held in Jeju and wrote this review: “The reason house churches are so powerful is because mokjang leaders are easily made”. Below is a summary of what he means by this.

“Many say that ministering is hard, and most fail when they start a new church. Before starting a new church, pastors study for an average of seven years, and serve as assistant pastors for many years. But even the most excellent of pastors face problems in their ministries once they start a new church, hence the reason so many new pastors are reluctant to start ministry.

But strange enough, house churches have people who start out as VIPs and have only recently accepted Jesus become mokjang leaders. They don’t have much biblical knowledge nor religious experiences so they go through trial and error. They fall, and struggle. They do as they have observed and learned, and souls are saved. This is where power comes from. There is nothing more powerful than practice, obedience and action. House churches may seem somewhat lame, but there is a reason behind their power.”

“There is another reason for their power: churches in general use people that are financially stable. They like to use those who have enough experience, knowledge and finance. On the other hand, house churches are the opposite. They serve despite not being able to. They believe that ‘power comes from serving despite your own deficiency’. House church mokjang leaders give because they have received. They serve because they too had been served. They love because they were loved. They were accepted by a mokjang so they too are willing to accept others. They don’t give themselves credit for it and it’s not their own righteousness, this is what makes it powerful.”

“Lastly, another reason for the power of house churches is that they confess ‘it’s hard, yet it makes them happy’. They have faith that they are doing something for Jesus that is worthwhile, and are genuinely happy that they are being used for his purpose and most of all, happy that they are being transformed.”

I pray that we will hold onto our faith and unite as one to become Crystal community, fulfilling Jesus’ great commission.
