Pastor Lee Soo Kwan’s article titled ‘Prayers to help form oneself’ from House Church Ministries hit close to home for me. It mentioned how people think that ‘believing in Jesus doesn’t change one’s qualities’ and I wasn’t an exception. However, when a person accepts Jesus as their Savior and he lives within them, it’s natural for the person to transform, and Christians need to constantly form themselves. Musicians with innate talent need practice in order to excel, and the same goes for us as Christians, as we need to continue to strive to transform ourselves in Jesus, and I’d like to share a few prayers I have created to help form myself.
1. To desensitize myself from attacks: you can tell how mature a person is by seeing how defensive they are, and most people tend to become defensive when they are criticized. I pray that I won’t be defensive or sensitive to criticism.
2. To be accepting of criticism: when someone points out our weaknesses, rather than accepting it, we tend to criticize them back, thinking, ‘how much better are you?’ This is a form of revenge that God has told us not to engage in, and I pray that I will be free from this.
3. To learn to enjoy not being the leader: when you are used to being a leader, you tend to avoid situations when you are not the centre of attention. I pray that regardless of whether I am the centre of attention or not, I can genuinely enjoy the situation.
4. To share in the joy and sadness of our church members: the bigger the church, the easier it gets to focus on the needs of the majority rather than on individual needs and their problems. I pray that I am able to take notice of each and every member of the church.
5. To appreciate others’ kindness and not take it for granted: As a pastor, I have many people serving me, and I worry that I may one day take it for granted, and I try to remind myself that it is more blessed to give than to receive, as Jesus had said.
There are other areas in which I need to continually pray about in order to improve my weaknesses and although I won’t ever be completely free from them, I hope to one day show my transformed self to God.
