Pastor Juan Carlos, well-known for his book ‘Disciple’, saw his church grow from 200 members to 600 in just two years. But what Jesus told him was that “the church wasn’t growing, it was just getting fat. It was nothing more than retaining 400 more people who did not change.” “Members of the church liked receiving than giving, and there were more people who wanted to be served, than to serve others.”
Christians today also see the church as a place that fulfills their needs and serves them, rather than as an opportunity to serve others and share their blessings. This is a foolish mindset that needs to change in order for us to mature into a genuine Christian. Rather than thinking “Who is going to fulfill my needs?”, we need to ask ourselves, “Whose needs can I meet?”
And surprisingly, the biggest blessing is received by those who serve. The bible also tells us that not those who receive, but those who serve, are blessed. Serving others involves sacrifice, patience, tears, and joy. It also means betrayal and pain. Through the action of serving others, you learn patience and humility, and moreover you discover yourself and learn how to live your life, which leads to gradual change and growth. Ultimately, those who serve others benefit the most.
Jesus’ death on the cross was the greatest way to show his service towards us. Through this, we received salvation and this is why serving others is essential for receiving salvation. Same applies for when we appoint someone to a position. It is impossible to appoint someone as a disciple of God without the sacrificial service for that person. Serving others leads to salvation, and to discipleship.
