Our church seeks a ‘natural spirituality and habitual devotion’, which refers to spirituality and devotion that is naturally displayed in our every day lives.
In order to achieve this, the church needs to be generous. Some churches have yearly ministry evaluations and encourage competition, and when someone makes a mistake, they are criticized.
However, a church is a ministry community as well as a healing community. At church, not only the competent, but those who are not so competent should also be encouraged and be given confidence.
It’s important to do Jesus’ ministry effectively, but once your focus is geared towards efficiency, the church can become very rigid, like the army or the workplace. The church needs to be generous towards people’s mistakes and help people learn from them. Just as there is a cycle of seasons, our faith can also go from hot to cold. Same goes for our devotion to the church. If someone’s faith has become cold, rather than panicking about it, waiting patiently for their recovery is very important. We need the generosity to wait.
The church service can be touching at times, at not so touching at other times. Same goes for the sermons. If we continue to seek perfection, the atmosphere becomes stiff.
This does not mean to say church ministries can be done without sincerity and diligence. Jesus’ ministry is a privilege that is followed by God’s rewards. But it needs to be done voluntarily and won’t last long when it is forced. You may be passionate about a ministry, but it is wrong to force the same level of passion on others. We must be hard on ourselves and easy on others. We can try our best to resemble Jesus, but must also be accepting of those who aren’t trying as hard as ourselves. Each of us should be trying our best to use our gifts to their full potential, but again, we must also learn to embrace the lack of skills in others. Only then will we achieve a generous church, and ‘a natural spirituality and habitual devotion’.
