During last year’s pastors’ joint meeting, I had an opportunity to eat with several pastors who had attended. It was quite difficult to carry out a conversation with the pastors talking and texting on their phones. One pastor couldn’t keep his eyes off his phone and was only half-listening to the conversation at the table. That moment, a guest speaker spoke and said, “I don’t talk to people who are on their smartphones while eating.” Maybe because of what he said, but since then, I have been trying not to use my phone too much during meal times.
These days, it’s hard for families to have a conversation at the dinner table with everyone on their phones while eating. There are people who can’t focus during service because of their phones and the same happens in mokjang moims.
Children can be easily influenced by their surroundings and I am worried about their future if they come to church and spend their time there on their phones.
This does not mean that smartphone are unnecessary altogether. It is a great tool of communication and information in this modern society. I have benefited from its convenience in my ministry as well and it is essential for us. My point is, we should try and avoid overusing it when we are with others such as during meal times, during service or mokjang moim, or bible study, etc.
I’d like to suggest not using the smartphone during service. Rather than using a bible app on your phone, please purchase and carry a physical bible and use the app in your personal time. Setting a smartphone rule in your mokjang, where everyone has to silence their phones and leave them in their bags or as far away from them as possible can be a step towards preventing ourselves from becoming slaves to our phones.
