          • One who always looks down on the ground

A boy in America found a $50 note on the ground. He was so happy that he developed a habit of always looking down on the ground when walking. Thanks to this habit, over his lifetime, he found 29,519 buttons, 54,172 hair pins, thousands of coins, and other odd bits and pieces like shiny marbles. However, he missed out on a lot because he was too busy searching for things on the ground. He missed out on the bright sun shining in the blue sky. He never got to see fluffy clouds in the autumn sky nor migratory birds peacefully flying past them. He was never able to appreciate beautifully blossoming flowers. His shoulders were always slouched, and his back also hunched due to his habit. He also lost his smile.
In Greek, the word for human is ‘anthropos’ and this means ‘one who looks up into the heights’. Animals are always looking down, and are not interested in the sky. Their sole interest is to hunt for food, mate, and breed. However, humans exist for more than just to fulfill their natural instincts to eat and drink. Our two feet may be on th ground, but we must always set our eyes on things above.
What people set their eyes on determines their lives. There is no life more unfortunate than one spent looking down. Paul also instructs us, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:1-2)
Let us not forget that we were not born to spend our lives looking down on the ground but that we belong to heaven and should set our eyes on things above.
