At the house church conference held in Korea last month, Pastor Choi Young Ki made an opening speech on how churches in Korea are facing a decline in attendance, and what house churches need to strive for in order to achieve church revival, and I would like to share with you what was discussed.
First of all, the attendance rate of mokjang meetings needs to gradually increase and exceed the Sunday service attendance rate. When there are more souls saved through mokjangs rather than newcomers through the church, the number of mokjang attendees will exceed the Sunday service attendance rates.
Secondly the church should be baptizing over 5% of the congregation each year. If the church is seeking to evangelize to non-believers, this is the minimum number of people we should be baptizing. Churches that are deeply rooted as a house church are baptizing 10% of the congregation every year.
Thirdly, the number of Sunday service attendees divided by the number of mokjangs should be below 7. This indicates that discipleship is effectively taking place and mokjangs are continually being divided. If the number goes above 8, this means new mokjangs are not being created from existing mokjangs due to lack of mokjas. Our church currently stands at 6.4.
Fourthly, there are testimonies every Sunday service. The fact that someone is giving a testimony every week means that people are experiencing God, lives are changing, and disciples are being made. And it also means that the congregation is participating in the service.
Lastly, the five mandatory Life classes are being offered. Most churches currently have two or three classes as mandatory and other practical classes such as Life at Work, Couple’s Live, Parents’ Life are optional.
Crystal Church also needs to have clear goals as above and continue to grow, getting closer to achieving the goals every year. Otherwise, we won’t be able to taste the fruit of the house church, mokja and moknyeos will grow weary and we will never be able to achieve the biblical church.
