          • A biblical view on same-sex marriage

Australia is holding a national vote on same-sex marriage. Up until 1984, the country used to be puritanical and banned homosexual marriages by law. However, Christians are now being accused of not protecting human rights of homosexuals. If same-sex marriage is legalized, the traditional marriage system will break down and the next generation will experience confusion over their gender identity and the church will face significant restrictions in defending the truth. Those who support same-sex marriage view homosexuality as a human rights issue. They consider homosexuals as the same as slaves and women who, in the past, were suppressed and weak. They think that they must fight for their human rights as the blacks and women had to in the past. However, homosexuality isn’t about human rights but is a sin which the Bible condemns.
The biblical condemnation of homosexuality is amongst the two horrific commandments to ‘not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek’ and to ‘not have sexual relations with an animal (Leviticus 18: 21-23). We can see how much God detests homosexuality.
In the New Testament, Paul uses homosexuality as the biggest example of how men have become corrupt (Romans 1: 28-29) and emphasizes the fact that homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor 6: 9-10). Homosexuality goes against God’s order of creation, therefore He condemned it in both the Old and New Testaments, He condemns it today, and will condemn it forever. Homosexual tendency itself is not a sin, however, just as even if you like to drink but resist the temptation and decide not to drink you are not a drunk, even if you have homosexual tendencies, as long as you don’t practice homosexuality, you are not a homosexual.
Pointing out the fact that homosexuality is a sin is not to convict homosexuals. It is to give them a chance to realize that if it is not God’s will it is a sin, and to give them a chance to repent, and repentance will lead to restoration. Christians must love homosexuals and help them repent and come back. But if we accept same-sex marriage because they are a minority, we would be robbing them of the opportunity for repentance.
