One thousand- this is an approximate number of disposable cups we use at church every Sunday. As we are already well aware, paper cups are harmful to our body and to the environment, but many people continue to use them because of the convenience. Many countries have identified disposable products as a cause of pollution and paper cups play a large role. Korea continues to run campaigns and find legal ways to solve this problem but its consumption keeps increasing. At our church, we are also experiencing an increase of cup usage and people throw them away after one use. It is also not easy to bulk purchase paper cups and store them in the small storage, hence our attempt to reduce its use.
I would like to ask everyone to bring their own mug cup with their name on the back and store them on the bench our kitchen team has prepared. We won’t be getting rid of paper cups completely but gradually reducing it. We will review after three months and if it is too inconvenient, we will come up with a new solution.
Since Telopea is not our own church, we have no other option but to use disposable cups, so I urge you to try your best to minimize their use. There have been ongoing complaints for a long time from the Australian church at Telopea to clean up disposable cups after service. For parents with young children, please supervise and teach your children not to play with paper cups and to put them in the bin after use. There is also a lot of waste being generated each week. I ask everyone to do their best to separate wastes and recycle.
