Relationship of service and obedience
We are living in a world where order of authority is breaking down across nations, societies, churches, and families. It makes me think ‘why can’t those in authority do their job properly?’ But another thought that crosses my mind is ‘what have I done for THEM?’ Paul says to ‘pray for all people- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives.’ (1 Tim 2:2) If we resist authority and try to disrupt it, the consequences may be that the power will flow into Satan, and in order for us to prevent this from happening, we have an obligation to pray for those with power.
The church doesn’t have a system of authority like the one in the world, but there is definitely a SPIRITUAL order of authority. If we, as Christians, have a negative attitude towards different levels of power, it can negatively affect us as individuals as well as the church as a whole. God wants us to serve Him in an orderly manner. Hence we have a responsibility to pray for those with power- ministers and leaders of the church.
Our small groups can also experience conflicts and crisis in the absence of authority. There is no spiritual benefit for us to have an attitude of “I know everything” or “I know better than him”. Small groups are a place for you to not only practice serving, but also obeying, and through this relationship of service and obedience, we can truly experience God’s Kingdom.
