At the time of today’s passage, divorce was common in the Jewish society. When a man found a woman more attractive than his wife, he would give her a certificate of divorce and marry the other woman. They failed to realise that the institution of marriage came from God and used marriage for their greed.
Marriage is a holy institution created by God. Through it, God made man and woman one, and made Christ and the church one. Divorce may be justified in a few reasonable instances (abuse or infidelity), but we mustn’t forget that marriage was created by God. Let us appreciate our spouses and preserve our ‘family’ God gave us.
Passage: Matthew 19:1-12
3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”
4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’
5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?
6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
