You become as happy as the size of your love.
A few years ago, I came across a testimony book written by a pastor's wife titled "I Am Truly a Happy Person." It was about someone who, despite having a disability, carried out pastoral work and confessed to being happy despite the difficulties of their ministry. Among the stories, there was a memorable short story about the pastor's wife meeting the director of an orphanage.
One day, the director of the orphanage, frustrated with the troublesome orphans, came to the pastor's wife seeking advice on whether to shut down the orphanage. The pastor's wife advised the director not to run the orphanage as a personal business or a means to make money, but to truly become a father to the orphans. Indeed, the pastor's wife had found that the orphan ministry was not easy. The orphans, being children with many wounds, required careful attention to words and actions, and despite the sacrifices and service, they could not control their scars and tempers and would rebel. However, when they were loved and embraced with the heart of a real father through prayer, they eventually began to change. And importantly, this made the pastor's wife happy.
I became a pastor because I love God and the souls entrusted to me. The reason pastoral work is happy is that there are souls to love, whether many or few. Shepherds and their partners confess happiness in loving and serving unbelieving and unchanging souls, not because it's easy, but because there are objects of love and an anticipation of change.
We can embrace the souls entrusted to us as much as the size of our love. I saw a frequently visited supermarket go out of business. It was in such a necessary location, I wondered why it failed. Initially, I thought the problem was that the fruits and vegetables in the display shelves were not fresh. However, the apparent issue seemed to be with the display shelves, but the real problem was that there were no fresh items in the storage. Because the sales were not happening, old items were being sold to avoid losses.
When I am not happy in pastoral work, I ask myself how much I love the souls. While it may seem that the difficulties and stresses of pastoral work are caused by troublesome and unchanged people, the reality is the lack of love for souls. I realised that the size of love grows with the heart willing to serve and the effort willing to sacrifice.
