          • Service of active listening

It feels great to be able to say what’s on your mind, but you can’t just talk into an empty space. You need a listener. Just being able to talk doesn’t make you feel good; what’s important is that you have someone listening. This is why restoration takes place in mokjangs. We can share how we’ve spent the week and we have mokjang families listening to us. Listening to others is much more important than we realize.
We also have sharing time in ministers’ meetings. We all listen attentively, but there are times when someone gets up to get coffee or to take a phone call, and this can be discouraging. What’s funny is when I get up to get coffee, I try to do it quietly in order not to interrupt, but when others do the same, it feels disruptive.
When we speak, we want people’s attention. We feel respected when people listen attentively. Likewise, we feel discouraged when people are unfocused and distracted. We even feel isolated. We must remember how much more important it is to listen during mokjang gatherings, than to talk. It’s a great service to others to listen. It may seem trivial, but it can play an important role in creating the right vibe.
As a preacher, I experience firsthand how encouraging and discouraging the audience’s attitude can make you feel. I feel extremely inspired when the audiences’ eyes are twinkling, they’re nodding their heads and responding with Amen. However, when someone gets up to leave during the sermon, I find it hard to focus.
The same goes for mokjangs. You feel like the centre of attention when people are attentive and they respond appropriately to you. This also helps your conversation become more genuine. Unless absolutely necessary, please try not to leave when someone is talking during your mokjang gathering. Especially the hosts or the mokjang leaders can sometimes fail to listen attentively as they’re too focused on hosting their guests. But what your mokjang families really want from you may be for you to listen to them. Active listening is a greater way to host more than anything.
There is a reason why I am repeatedly talking about the attitude of listening. It’s because we don’t realize that we may be poor listeners but there is no exception. In fact, you may be the very cause of creating a distracting environment. We use our lips to speak, but to listen, we require our eyes, lips, ears, and our whole body. Hence, listening is a great service.

This week’s message: Many people have started Life Bible classes the second half of the year. I hope all mokjangs can participate in a Bible class.
