          • The present moment is important (This is a summary of Pastor Lee Sukwan’s article)

Right now the world is going through a deep crisis that has never before been experienced. At a time like this, Christianity must play a role in giving hope to the world and comforting unbelievers. However, the fact that we are being criticized as a strange cult due to some churches in Korea worries me that when this is all over, people will turn their backs against churches and the gospel will be blocked.
Before the massacre of the Jews during WWII, newspapers all over Europe printed numerous articles criticizing and ridiculing them. The Jews were disliked because their belief in God made them feel superior, and were always gathered by themselves, and acted selfishly, doing whatever it took to make money, as if they were a for-profit group.
In times of crisis, Korean Christianity should not be too opinionated or give the impression that we are a for profit organization, gathering only by ourselves. If the church is light and salt, we should not be debating over whether or not to give worship at church, but think about how we can have a positive influence on the society, become a lamp for them in the darkness, and be the light and salt in the world.
It’s understandable that we feel targeted, being told not to gather when other places are operating as normal. However, if we were to argue about the fact that we’re being told to shut down when night clubs and pubs are still open, we are treating ourselves the same as pubs and we will look as if we were fighting to protect our profits. We need to be the first to show good deeds and show sacrifice.
Churches must come together to focus on comforting, helping, and saving. We should keep our social distance as we’ve been told and look for ways to help such as cleaning up around us, helping those in need discretely, etc. If we proactively practiced these kinds of good deeds and service, when this chaos is over, many people will remember the good deeds of the church. I believe it will glorify God and I believe this is what every house church should be doing.

This column is a summary of an article by Pastor Lee Sukwan, director of House Church Ministry, “We must act first now.”

            This week’s message
Please look around for anyone who’s in trouble and need help, and practice small acts of kindness.
