The people who had done evil and had returned with repentance did not know what God really wanted. The people asked if they can recover worship without true repentance, asking if they can offer great sacrifices and sacrifices that are visible to the eyes. What God wants from the people is to practice justice and walk with God with love and humility. I want this day to be accompanied by the Holy Spirit with acts of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope by demolishing idols piled up in us and being sanctified by the word of truth.

6 With what shall I come before the Lord and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?
7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
