Jotham who was Abimelek’s younger brother, as well as Gideon’s son, questions the people of Shechem whether appointing Abimelek as king is the right thing to do and rebukes them. If their decision is made in good faith they will enjoy Abimelek’s reign but if it is not, Jotham prophecies that fire will break out on the family.
Satan distorts the truth and brings confusion through his deceitfulness in areas of the political, social and cultural to the extent that it is difficult for people to live as Christians who are able to distinguish what honourable actions are.
However, just like when the Lord’s spirit was on Gideon so that he was able to be victorious over his enemies, we need to remain in the Holy Spirit in order to distinguish and act honourably.
Passage to read: Judges 9:16-25
19 So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today? If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too!
20 But if you have not, let fire come out from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!”
