          • My choice, God’s will

In the Old Testament, one of the methods used to determine the will of God was by ‘casting lots’. It was a popular method when making decisions or selecting people, because it didn’t depend on a person’s possessions or skills. Clearly, this is different to gambling or the lottery so we must be careful when understanding the term.

In today’s passage, David uses ‘casting lots’ to allocate roles equally. He could have used his authority to select people he favored but he chose instead to cast lots to leave it in God’s hand.
David trusted and obeyed God’s choice rather than showing partiality.

Today, we must beware of ‘casting lots’ that determine our ‘luck’, but we must pray a ‘prayer’ of trust to God who reigns over all the earth. When we lay down our choices and choose to pray and wait for God’s will, He will show us what is best.

            Passage: 1 Chronicles 24:1-31

3 With the help of Zadok a descendant of Eleazar and Ahimelek a descendant of Ithamar, David separated them into divisions for their appointed order of ministering.
4 A larger number of leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than among Ithamar’s, and they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of families from Eleazar’s descendants and eight heads of families from Ithamar’s descendants. 5 They divided them impartially by casting lots, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar.

            1. Did you think of Jesus when you woke up this morning?
            2. What is God’s message to you?
            3. What do you need to obey?
            4. What are you grateful for today?
