          • When Facing Difficult Times
While it is a blessing to only experience good things in our walk of faith, the reality is that we often face various difficulties. These challenges occur throughout our lives. The attitude and mindset we hold in the face of such hardships can either lead to the growth or the regression of our character and faith.
That’s why James says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds” (James 1:2). This is because such trials produce perseverance, and perseverance leads us to become mature individuals.
However, in real life, we often make the mistake of not enduring difficulties and instead reacting emotionally. For example, some quit their jobs when faced with hardship, unable to bear it, or fall into despair and give up on their faith life. Such responses not only cause us to miss opportunities for growth but often leave deeper problems and wounds in our circumstances or relationships.
Hebrews tells us, “But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved” (Hebrews 10:39). When we go through valleys in life, we must endure with patience. In the valley, our vision becomes narrow, and we tend to see only our emotions. That’s why John Maxwell said, “Decisions should not be made in the valley, but on the mountaintop.”
Our ego struggles to endure disadvantage or discomfort. Yet faith and character grow through the battle within us. As we go through difficult situations, our ego is broken, and we grow. Ultimately, perseverance shapes us into mature people who resemble Jesus. And after enduring hardships, we will become people who receive the blessings God has prepared for us.
