I once had a conversation with a brother who came to the church for the first time. When I asked him why he visited the church, his answer was, ‘It is because I was thinking, whether I would be happy if I went to a church’.
I think the happy appearance of a Christian is the most powerful way of evangelism. Humans by nature, desire happiness. So this brother also came to find happiness just like the bees and butteflies being attracted to the scent of flowers.
Unfortunately, there are many Christians who are not really happy. The strange thing is that there are some people who don’t seem to be happy the longer they attend church. People who believed in Jesus and were so happy seemed to be happy for a while, but they don’t seem happy anymore. Why is this?
There are many reasons, but the wrong perception of Jesus also seems to play a big part. Common pictures about Jesus come to mind, such as the cross, the image of Jesus praying alone in the garden of Gethsemane, sweating and praying alone, the image of desperate suffering, and the image of anguish. However, this agonising appearance was only a few days out of Jesus’ three years of public life. Jesus’ usual face was a smiling face. He liked to get along with people, smiled a lot, and was a bright and a happy person.
If we start drawing the wrong image of Jesus, our religious life and our life can resemble that wrong image. So the longer you live your life of faith, the less interesting it could become. We must not forget that the image of Jesus who loves us and was carrying out the work of salvation, was bright, happy, and full of love than the image of anguish.
As Christians, the gospel we can give to the world is that we ourselves have become happy in the love of Jesus Christ. The best evangelism that you can give to your unbelieving family or those around you is to become a happy person.
