A newcomer’s decision to become a member of a church is influenced by their first impression of the church. I have summarized two points to help our VIPs feel the most welcome when they come to church after a long time of their mokjang families’ prayer and service. And this will also help us serve them the best we can with the mindset that this may be the last opportunity to bring them back to God.
First, it’s important to create a welcoming atmosphere for our visitors. In the past, we had focused on making them feel comfortable and not feeling pressured to register as a new member of the church, and this is essential but what’s also important is for us to make them feel welcome, not only by their mokjang families but by everyone they meet. And this is the first step towards them settling in the church.
Secondly, we need a new member team. Instead of a separate team, we have had the Accepting Jesus meeting and Living Life, but this caused new members to wait for a Living Life class to commence and during this time there were no opportunities for them to understand our church and the philosophy our ministry holds. Having a new member team will help the newcomers settle in in the interim, and ensure that they don’t feel abandoned.
We will run a meeting on the first Sunday of every month for three weeks and depending on the number of attendees it will run for approximately an hour. And after the three weeks, those who have attended will move on to Accepting Jesus meeting with myself.
I anticipate everyone’s cooperation in making all our visitors feel welcome, with the mindset that today may be the last opportunity to save the lost souls.
